Turf Toe is the common name for spraining the main ligament of the big toe. While it can be found in any athlete who pushes of the ground to propel themselves forward, it is most often seen in football players and earned its namesake when artificial turf became more prevalent on American Football fields.
Like many orthopedic injuries, Turf Toe is rated in three levels, with grade 1 being the least severe and grade 3 being the most severe injury.
