Orthopaedic Treatments: Hip Replacement in Charleston, SC

It’s no surprise that hip replacement surgery can improve your quality of life, but did you know that this procedure may also increase your life expectancy? Continue reading to learn more about the correlation of hip replacement surgery and life expectancy.

How Hip Replacement Extends Your Life

A Look At the Studies

A recent study published by Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research® (CORR®), shows that the life expectancy of a patient who undergoes an elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) has a slightly improved survival rate compared to people of similar age and sex.

Dr. Peter Cnudde, who spearheaded this study, states, “Our study suggests that hip replacement can add years to life as well as adding ‘life to years’ — increasing the chances of longer survival as well as improving the quality of life.”

The greatest difference in longevity was found in patients who elected to have a THA due to a diagnosis of primary osteoarthritis which is the most common reason patients decide to undergo a THA in the first place.

Why the Correlation?

While there is not yet a definitive answer as to why hip replacement surgery may lead to a longer life, there are a number of factors that may influence this correlation. While a hip replacement is not a guarantee that you will go on to live a long and healthy life, this study offers hope that a longer life expectancy may be just one of the many benefits of undergoing hip replacement surgery.

Additional Benefits of Hip Replacement Surgery

In addition to the possibility of a longer, healthier life, hip replacement can drastically improve your quality of life. If hip pain or instability is keeping you from doing the things you love or from simple tasks such as walking, hip replacement may offer the chance to reclaim the activities that make life worthwhile. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your hips, it’s time to talk with a specialist who can help you decide if hip replacement surgery might be the ideal solution.
