Casts are typically worn for about six weeks, but the duration can vary based on the severity of the fracture and how quickly you heal. Your doctor will monitor your progress with follow-up X-rays.

Surgical Treatment

Certain fractures are more complex and require surgery to ensure a successful recovery. Surgery is often recommended for:

  • Unstable fractures: Breaks where the bone fragments are likely to move out of place even with a cast.
  • Open fractures: Injuries where the broken bone pierces the skin, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Comminuted fractures: Breaks where the bone shatters into multiple pieces.
  • Intra-articular fractures: Fractures that extend into the wrist joint.

Surgical techniques involve using pins, screws, plates, or an external fixator to hold the broken bones together in the correct position.
