What South Carolina Sports Medicine offers that many other local Orthopaedic or sports practices don’t is prompt evaluation by a fellowship-trained sports medicine doctor. Dr. John T. Hulvey, Jr., M.D., is in the office every day and can typically see a patient for an evaluation within 24 hours. He can also expedite surgical referrals as needed — often on the same day. Dr. Hulvey’s late father was the first board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon in rural Southwestern Virginia — as well as the first “team doctors” in that area — which likely influenced his specialization in sports medicine.
As a primary care sports medicine doctor, Dr. Hulvey gains satisfaction from being able to tackle the core musculoskeletal cause of patients’ pain.
“My current practice model allows me to take the time I need to get a complete history of the patient’s complaint and then come up with a personalized treatment plan,” he says. “No two patients (or problems) are ever exactly the same. We’re typically focused on just one problem — not several that we have to squeeze into a limited period of time.”
Throughout his undergraduate career, Dr. Hulvey worked as an orderly at his local hospital. This led to his switch from a broadcast journalism major to pre-med.
His experience taking care of the College of Charleston sports teams during his residency led him to his primary care sports medicine fellowship, and he has been focused exclusively in sports medicine since then.
Dr. Hulvey was inspired to join the South Carolina Sports Medicine team because of the practice’s esteemed legacy.
“Since 1989, SCSM has set the standard for what an elite sports medicine practice should be in the Lowcountry,” he explains. “The level and quality of training of the physicians within the practice is unparalleled.”
During his time as a sports medicine doctor, he has served as team physician for Ashley Ridge, Cane Bay, and Berkeley High Schools. Dr. Hulvey has also been the team physician for both the Charleston Riverdogs and South Carolina Stingrays. He is currently the team physician for Charleston Southern University.
